Air Battle Manager (ABM)

The total training time required for ABMs to become operational is approximately one year. The training incurs a service commitment of six years active duty upon graduation from Undergraduate Air Battle Manager Training (UABMT). For a more detailed explanation, see this ABM Overview Video (non-governmental).

Unlike pilots, CSOs, and RPA pilots, Air Battle Managers will not attend Initial Flight Training. Instead, ABM candidates will head straight to UABMT at Tyndall AFB, Florida for six months. The program begins with an Academic phase, where students will learn about the systems and protocol that ABMs use. Then, students will learn how to operate the systems onboard the aircraft and control aircraft in a simulated combat environment.

ABMs typically fly in only two kinds aircraft:

  • E-8 Joint Surveillance Target Attack Radar System (JSTARs)

    • Robbins AFB, GA

  • E-3 Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS)

    • Tinker AFB, OK

    • Elmendorf AFB, AK

    • Kadena AFB, Japan
